Metalworking Fluid Selection: Castrol
Metalworking Fluid Magazine apologizes to Castrol for the unspell-checked first edition of this report. Ouch! The Sandblaster has been sandblasted for that. So, what do we have here? Castrol organizes it's products into high-level categories by formulation again (Neat Oil, Synthetic, Soluble Oils, and Deformation), as all of the large manufacturer's seem to do. As End Users, we don't completely get this methodology. We prefer starting with a constraint rather than a preference. For example, the End User at least knows what he or she is machining. Starting with formulation type just leads to a wondering path, as the choice between a soluble oil or a synthetic product may be less important than the functionality of the products recommended for the material and operation; which are critical path choices. Castrol provides a nice overview page with each formulation type so if you have been told you have no choice on that for some reason, you then can choose the formulation and then move forward to a downloadable product sheet for that family. There is a six pager for the Soluble products (click the picture to the left) that provides nice information of operations, but fails to identify or recommend a specific product for them. We much prefer a overview product chart. Castrol offers a comprehensive range of fine metalworking fluids based on additional criteria specific to the challenges of the operation, but we do not like the site organization at all for overview of products to applications.
