CIMCOOL Fluid Technology is pleased to introduce InSol™ lubrication. Cimcool reports that this new technology includes unique surfactants and inhibitors to provide excellent multi-metal performance without the use of extreme pressure additives. Since InSol Technology works though controlled water solubility, lubricant performance lasts longer due to low depletion rates. Cimcool claims observation of performance improvements of up to 20% as compared to chlorinated lubricants.

When the whole world wants to get rid of oils and is looking for cleaner options, there are still a few applications which can't be compromised, where oil is the only practical solution. SULFOL LCI is the latest range of neat cutting oils from oelheld. They claim it is "derived from low aromatic, solvent refined base oils and can be used with both ferrous metals.

Many paper solicitation chairs (PSC) will be preparing "Call for Abstracts" to highlight specific abstracts topics that the committee is soliciting.

The August edition of TLT is here and it brings some good reading on metalworking fluids. Specifically, as the title states, the article explores the challenges of formulating a good metalworking fluid where the key requirements are especially difficult to balance. The ingredients required to maintain a biostable environment tend to cause staining. Beverage cans have long been the kings of aluminum use.

Our July focus on the difficulties of measurement of microbial growth brings this to our attention.  ASTM recently added Work Item: ASTM WK46797 – “New Test Method for Quantitative Evaluation of Bactericidal Activity of Non-Porous Antimicrobial-Treated Articles.”  According to their website:  “This standard method will be used to determine the antimicrobial properties of non-porous articles treated with specific antimicrobial agents.

Instructor Dr. Alan Eckard’s presentation will explore the definitions of synthetic metal removal fluids (MRFs), with discussion of typical compositions, applications, attributes, trends in usage and new technology that is emerging. It is generally accepted that “synthetic” as applied to lubricants of all types means petroleum oil free. In some cases it may be further defined in metalworking situations as compositions which are chemical solutions of components in water.

Some good things come around every year. Christmas and New Years come to mind. But some good things don't. This is one of them. METALWORKING FLUID MAGAZINE has learned that the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association is in the planning phase for production of the 5th International Metal Removal Fluids Conference. The last one held in the US was six long years ago in 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan. Co-planners for that event included AIHA, UEIL, and AIAG. It was three solid days of overlapping presentations on metalworking fluids. The currently planned location is Rosemont, Illinois.
