One common problem observed over the years with machine tools is paint peeling off after contact with the metalworking fluid.  This is common knowledge and many companies have learned to perform paint compatibility test with new fluids before shop testing.  However, metalworking fluid is like your teenage son - easy to blame but not always at fault.  (Trust me on this).  The type of failure is instructive.  With a simple analytical view of the failur

As a Metalworking Fluid User, every drop counts. Reuse and recycle is a secret of money making. Most of the fluid waste is caused by contamination, and if it’s machining application, a major contaminant is chips. CE Complaint chip trapper from Exair Corporation vacuums the fluid from the sump filled with debris into the included 55 gallon drum, trapping all the solids in reusable filter bag.

Despite appropriate microbiological surveillance and use of biocides, large quantities of bacteria and fungi have often been found in metalworking fluids. To remove these biofilm causing bacteria, two strategies are currently employed; cleaning the system before charging of fresh metalworking fluids or the use of biocides. However still there is always debate about their effectiveness and the ultimately affect on machinist health.

Dear MWF Magazine,

I want to take the time and say thank you on your articles about my father Felipe Presas Sr. and remembrance of him. I can remember the day very clearly as an 18 year old in my senior year getting a call from my mother my dad was in the hospital. It was the worst day of my life, I hope that studies and being in the public eye will help your magazine make a difference and keep from this happening to other families. Thank you for remembering him it really means a lot to me.

This certification isn’t easy to get, which is why it’s worth so much. While plant managers remain under pressure to cut costs, the quality of fluid management cannot be compromised. To receive STLE’s CMFS certification, an individual must demonstrate both knowledge and experience. CMFS holders use a multidisciplinary approach to solving problems, maintaining quality and protecting plant workers.
